Reframing Repentance, Reclaiming Desire: Creativity as a spiritual practice in a world of accelerating change
You want to leave the world better than you found it, but the scope of the world’s problems feel so overwhelming you don’t know where to start. This summer, coach, creative, and accidental theologian January Jaxon will take us on a journey from learning to recognize the shame & anxiety keeping us paralyzed to rediscovering our innate capacity for creative freedom. Through Biblical stories, theological insights, and fresh & fun activities, participants will learn that creativity — not correct behavior! — is how God comes to life in the flesh.
Monday — Creativity and the Bible
We’ll explore the stories of Eve and Mary through the lens of Maureen Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey, and learn how God moves us from anxious striving to creative receiving.
Tuesday — Creativity and Shame (Genesis 3)
Rene Girard’s mimetic theory of desire shows us the origins of human violence and reveals how Christ’s death on the cross frees us to live with empathy instead of shame & blame.
Wednesday — Creativity and Change (Luke 1:45)
Because we live in a fallen world, a movement toward the Kingdom of Heaven will always be a movement toward change. Learn what repentance and the scientific method have in common, and how Christ empowers us to meet change & uncertainty not as something to fear but as an opportunity to create.
Thursday — Creativity and the Body (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)
If bodies were “bad”, Jesus wouldn’t have become one. Our faith must get physical, yet many of us are stuck in our heads and disconnected from our bodies. We’ll explore how God speaks to us through our bodies and emotions so we can reclaim the unique role each of us plays in the collective Body of Christ.
Friday — Conquering the Serpent
Still believe the lie that you’re “just not creative”? The Devil would love it if you never stepped into your full creative power. We’ll challenge the beliefs that keep us stuck, small, and scared, and come home to God’s truth that we all have the power & agency to create a more loving world.
We hope you join us on this journey! Register now!
